1. PETALUMA IS HOME TO SONOMA COUNTY’S BEST EATERIES
Petaluma sits just outside the San Francisco area and has a population just under 58,000 people. It has always been known for its booming farming and agricultural industry, including many egg farms and dairy creameries. The small-town feel mixed with a vibrant charm encompasses a lot of what’s great about Petaluma. Many Petaluma home and business owners take advantage of the close proximity to San Francisco and the easy commute options.
The historic downtown area is located along the famous Petaluma River and is filled with historical buildings and landmarks, antique shops, and some of the region’s top restaurants. Today, Petaluma is famous for being a haven for Northern California foodies with its amazing restaurant selection unlike any other city of comparable size. Plus, with tons of annual local events, top-rated schools, and recreational parks, you’ll be ready to call Petaluma home in no time.
2. SANTA ROSA IS THE CRAFT BEER CAPITAL OF THE U.S.
As the biggest city in Sonoma County, Santa Rosa is home to about 180,000 residents. As such, it boasts a wide array of restaurants, parks, shopping, and outdoor recreation. Santa Rosa is home to countless wineries that rival the best Napa has to offer. It also happens to be home to world-famous craft breweries that make any hop-head jump for joy.
In fact, Santa Rosa was recently named the ‘Microbrew Capital of the United States’. It has a local beer scene that ranks nationally as #1 for its craft beer quality and number of local breweries.
You will also find higher education options are easily accessible with acclaimed Santa Rosa Junior College and a close proximity to Sonoma State University. Snoopy fans will also delight in the abundant homages to Peanuts creator and past Santa Rosa resident, Charles M. Schultz.
3. IN SONOMA YOU COME FOR THE WINE, BUT STAY FOR THE CHARM
We couldn’t possibly forget about the county’s namesake town of Sonoma! There are plenty of neighborhood options in this town of just over 11,000 residents, from the more dense city center to the quieter perimeter with newer homes. The historic Sonoma Plaza is the centerpiece to a full day of fun with an endless row of shops, restaurants, wine tasting, and even a little history lesson.
But the key to Sonoma’s charm is the amazing wineries that surround this beautiful town. Most Sonoma Wineries have been family-owned and operated for generations. You can find all the unique flavors of Sonoma County on their farm-to-table menus, and get immersed in the heart of wine country.
4. SEBASTOPOL IS HOME TO THE ARTSY SOULS
Sebastopol has a population just under 8,000 residents. However, it draws in visitors from all around Sonoma County for their Gravenstein Apple Fair. There’s still plenty to do even when it’s not apple season. The downtown shopping center, the Barlow, is dedicated entirely to local producers and artisans to sell their food, crafts, and of course wine.
Sebastopol is often described as Sonoma County’s “hippie town,”. The Sebastopol community embraces local artists and crafts of all kinds, from building-wide murals to recycled “trash art” sculptures littering just about every yard. It’s a straight shot to the coast or popular redwood forest when you’re looking for a day out. It’s also a great location for commuting over to Santa Rosa less than 10 miles away.
5. HEALDSBURG IS WHERE EVERY DAY IS SPA DAY
Healdsburg, with its population of nearly 12,000 residents, is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. Travel + Leisure Magazine named Healdsburg downtown area as one of “America’s Most Beautiful Town Squares”. This is in reference to its extensive winery options and renowned farm to table restaurants. Spa days seem to be a second nature in Healdsburg. It offers dozens of options ranging from a luxurious massage to the perfect pedicure. Plus, it’s never hard to find the perfect brunch spot, or wine tasting room, all within a mile of the town square.
It’s not all wine and dine, though. Healdsburg also offers a spirited outdoor scene with plenty of hiking, river activities, and bike trails. It really manages to pack the entire Wine Country lifestyle in a tight 4.5 square mile package.
6. BODEGA BAY IS THE GATEWAY TO THE PACIFIC COAST
Sonoma County’s incredible coastline is on full display from the hills surrounding the small town of Bodega Bay. This tranquil coastal town is home to a population of only 665. However, this small community is famous worldwide for being the backdrop to Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film “The Birds”.
You’ll adapt to the local charm in no time among the local shops, scenic outlooks, and some of the best seafood options you can find. Lovely days out include a picnic at Bodega Head for ocean views, watching the fishing boats traversing the bay, a coastal drive up Highway 1, and hiking along the Russian River.
